It has HDMI so no matter. That is WAY too tight. I then powered up three times, getting three red rings each time, and let it cool about minutes in between. I test it by playing a movie all day. I also tighten them first, not after heating.
I DID put in the 2nd gen heatsink, with the heatpipe, though, for better cooling. Again, in my opinion, the x clamps seem like a good idea and SHOULD work if the paste is re-applied and the connection with the heatsink restored, but since i have them apart, i replace them with screws.
Well, hope this comment helps. Also, wikipedia has some info too. Good luck to you all. Some instances last longer than others but, it seems to be a long-term fix more often than not. Allen, 2 lights is overheat, not hardware failure. You should stick to this guide, splurge on the arctic silver and gradually tighten the screws until the light turns green.
Lowes has everything in my experience, and you can get away with using cheap paste if you really slather it on. Thanks for the guide. I bought the same exact parts as listed above from Lowes x2 as needed, im going to do this on an elite Bought Antec 7 thermal paste from Staples and coated a decent amount on it. Then used 2nylon washers per bolt and did exactly what he instructed. After it overheated I tightend the screws while powered on as instructed and then unpluged the power and put the Xbox Mobo in the freezer for ten min, took it out then let sit for 5 min…powered right on normally.
Hi guys, i opened. Can anyone help me? I just tried this and it seems to be working fine. I just used one plastic washer on the bottom and on the top I used one plastic then the metal washer to even out the heat sinks on top of the processor.
I bought the artic thermal paste at a computer store. I turned the screws just tight enough to be snug with pliers. Also to hold the screws in while you put the heat sink I used tape for each one separately.

As a note, i always remove and throw the top of the cage, and the rear grills of the cage. Last edited: Jan 29, You will find 20mm bolts go into the gpu heatsink and bend the foils. This is fine, or you can drill them through first with a 4mm bit, or better still use 16mm bolts for that, if you can find them.
I never can, so just screw into the foils. Good luck, pm me if you want more help. Thanks for the info Nick, will bookmark as its useful information to have, a mod should really get one of you guys to write a sticky with all this info.
Of course it would require a disclaimer. How many washers come with those kits mate? How long are the bolts? Is a heatgun included? You know the space saver wheel in the boot of your car, that gets you home? That's those kits. No heatgun needed.
While the sink is off the GPU fire up and within 30secs you get 2 red lights, leave for 30 secs more. Unplug and reasssemble. Job done. If its still RROD then fire up again with fans diconnected, blah, blah, overheat, you know the drill This will re-seat the chip.
Re-adjust you bolts as they will now need tightening again. You only need to 're-flow' the GPU and these other apparent issues go away. A very good X-clamp fix above though.
